NORC Life Trustee Evelyn M. Kitagawa Dies at 87

Evelyn M. Kitagawa, 1920 - 2007


Evelyn M. Kitagawa, noted University of Chicago sociologist and NORC Life Trustee, died on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at age 87. Kitagawa was a member of NORC's Board of Trustees from 1973 to 1988, when she was named a life trustee.


She was noted for her work on mortality, cohabitation, and out-of-wedlock childbearing.  Her work on causes of death found large differences in mortality rates based on race, gender, and income.


In 1954, she became an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Chicago. She became a Professor in 1970 and served as the Sociology Department Chair from 1972 to 1978.  She was also Director of the Population Research Center from 1977 to 1987.  She retired in 1989.
