Start-Ups and New Business Characteristics

Entry of new firms into an extant market has been subject to extensive research, but there remains a dearth of quantitative analysis on small firm start-ups. There is little reason to believe that one size fits all and that small firms will behave the same way as large firms; the life-cycle of these firms, the nature of their performance, and their role in the national innovation system deserves greater attention. Researchers using secure NIST-TIP and Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS) data in the Data Enclave are working on these topics and those related to liability of newness, performance outcomes (including hyper-growth characteristics), and location factors.
