Joint ventures and alliances have long been advocated as effective mechanisms for developing new products and new product technology innovation. Firms engage in joint ventures to garner direct benefits on a number of fronts, including for example, access to resources, technologies, and markets. Because of the importance of joint ventures, the extant literature on making and managing their effectiveness informs on a number of fronts, yet a number of questions remain.
