FAQ

What is the NORC Data Enclave?

The NORC Data Enclave is a secure, virtual environment for storing and analyzing sensitive microdata.

What datasets are currently stored in the Enclave?

Currently, the Data Enclave houses five datasets: the Making Connections Survey, the the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED), the Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS), the surveys of NIST's Technology Innovation Program (formerly Advanced Technology Program), and the USDA's Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS).

How can I get access to the data in the Enclave?

Contact Tim Mulcahy to apply and register as a data user.

What are the advantages of accessing data through the NORC Data Enclave?

The Enclave allows remote access to sensitive microdata that researchers would previously have had to travel to use in a centralized location. The Enclave provides researchers a full set of analytic tools, allows for importation of external datasets for merging, and fosters a collaborative environment where researchers can work together on a shared dataset.

Why should my organization/research team consider storing its data in the Enclave?

A good dataset is a terrible thing to let go to waste. The Enclave makes the data you have collected far more accessible to a wide variety of researchers than under any previous system. It fosters a real community around the data and helps to build a base of shared knowledge. The data you provide is heavily secured and no researchers will be granted access without your clearance.

Where can I learn more about the NORC Data Enclave?

Our website provides a great deal of information about us, the datasets that we provide access to, and the researchers conducting work in the Enclave. For more information, contact Tim Mulcahy.
